Injury forces Paige VanZant off UFC 216 card
A back injury has forced Paige VanZant (7-3) out of her flyweight bout against Jessica Eye (11-6, 1 NC) scheduled for next month’s UFC 216 card in Las Vegas. Subsequently, Eye is expected to be rescheduled against a different opponent on a future card.
UFC officials reported the news on Monday.
UFC 216 will be held Oct. 7 from T-Mobile Arena. A lightweight interim championship headlines the card with Tony Ferguson taking on Kevin Lee. Demetrious Johnson puts his flyweight belt on the line against Ray Borg in the co-headliner.
The bout would have marked both girls’ UFC flyweight debut since the promotion opened up the division earlier this year. VanZant had previously been competing at strawweight, while Eye was moving down from bantamweight.
VanZant was last in action in Dec. 2016 when she was submitted by Michelle Waterson at UFC on Fox 22. Prior to that she scored a KO win over Bec Rawlings in August of last year. “12 Guage” is now 4-2 in her UFC tenure.
Following a TKO win over Leslie Smith at UFC 180 in Nov. 2015, Eye has been in a slump and has dropped her last four fights via decision. She most recently lost a split decision to Bethe Correia at UFC 2013 in Sept. 2016.
