GANRYUJIMA – 05/06/2017: UFC / PRIDE Vet Michihiro Omigawa to Take On a Heavyweight Boxer Jailo Kusunoki

Michihiro Omigawa is going to fight Jailo Kusunoki in the open-weight bout.

UFC / PRIDE veteran usually fights at 145 lbs & under so Omigawa is giving up about 100 lbs for this bout.

In Ganryujima, Kusunoki’s discipline / background is listed as boxing, but a 42-year old Japanese Brazilian is mostly known as the heavyweight champion of one of Japan’s top kickboxing promotions called J-NETWORK. Sure, Kusunoki does have more than 10 pro boxing fights in his resume but in last few years, he was definitely more of a kickboxing than a boxer. Most recently, in January, Kusunoki scored a KO win over the New Japan Kickboxing heavyweight champ Haruki Shibata.

And, Kusunoki weighs about 255 lbs. Needless to say, a heavy striker who is much bigger than Omigawa.

At the press conference held in Tokyo earlier this month, Omigawa explained the reason for doing this open-weight bout, “Right now I am teaching judo at Omigawa Dojo and most of the kids I teach are relatively small. Therefore, I want to show these kid their teacher going up against a much bigger opponent.”
