GANRYUJIMA – 05/06/2017: Lightweight Kikuno takes on 300+ lbs Ambriz

Katsunori Kikuno

We all know that bouts in Ganryujima are not MMA but at this point, not sure if the open-bout between Katsunori Kikuno and Jimmy Ambriz is exactly a safe competition though.

Sure, Kikuno can win this bout by pushing or taking Ambriz to outside the circle mat, like Sumo, as long as he can do this in three different occasions.

Kikuno could use his foot works and could catch Ambriz off balance. He could. Who knows.

But at the same time, about 300 lbs more heavier Ambriz could land heavy punch to Kikuno’s head. With that four-ounce open finger gloves, Ambriz’s bomb could land on Kikuno’s temple or jaw.

Ambriz is almost twice the size of Kikuno.

Even a simple throw can be devastating.

Then, why is this fight happening?

According to Sadaharu Tanikawa, both Kikuno and Michihiro Omigawa, other confirmed UFC vet for this upcoming event, apparently, requested to fight in the open-weight bout.

At the press conference held in Tokyo, Kikuno said, “To me, Ganryujima is the place for challenge. I challenged to compete under the Ganryujima rules. Challenged to the four-men tournament. Challenged to the revenge fight. And now, I am challenging to the open-weight bout.”

And the good thing is, Tanikawa is still concerned about the safety, “This is different from what I used to do in K-1. We must be cautious about reality. We need to make adjustments. (on open-weight bout) Maybe we should prohibit throwing head down first to the mat, and also even a throw from the head-lock position.”

Let’s hope Tanikawa would come up with more adjustments to make sure no one would get seriously injured.
