A women’s strawweight matchup between former title challengers Claudia Gadelha (15-2) and Jessica Andrade (16-6) has been booked for UFC Fight Night 117 taking place Sept. 23 from Saitama Super Arena in Saitama, Japan.
Gadelha fought for the women’s strawweight title in July of last year, and although the bout earned “Fight of the Night” honors, she lost the unanimous decision to reigning champ Joanna Jedrzejczyk.
Since then though, “Claudinha” has won two straight, starting with a unanimous decision over Cortney Casey at UFC Fight Night 100 last November. And most recently, Gadelha earned “Performance of the Night” honors for her first-round submission of Karolina Kowalkiewicz at UFC 212 in June.
Gadelha is a BJJ black belt under Andre Pederneiras and has finished seven of her 15 wins by submission and two by knockout. The only two losses in her career have been to Jedrzejczyk.
Andrade herself had a three-fight winning streak snapped by Jedrzejczyk via unanimous decision at UFC 211 in May. Prior to that she had bested Angela Hill via unanimous decision in a “Fight of the Night” performance in February.
And before that Andrade earned “Performance of the Night” honors for her submission of Joanne Calderwood last September and stopped she Jessica Penne via TKO in June of last year. The 25-year-old BJJ purple belt has finished seven of her 16 wins via submission and five by knockout.
A light heavyweight rematch between Maurico “Shogun” Rua and Ovince Saint Preux is expected to headline the UFC Fight Night 117 card. Stay tuned to adcombat.com for all your BJJ and MMA news updates.
