Top-ranked flyweight Jussier Formiga (19-5) will face Japanese submission specialist Yuta “Ulka” Sasaki (20-4-2) at UFC Fight Night 117 in September. News of the matchup was announced on Friday.
UFC Fight Night 117 will be held September 23 from Saitama Super Arena in Saitama, Japan. A light heavyweight rematch between Ovince Saint Preux and Mauricio “Shogun” Rua is expected to headline the card.
Formiga is currently ranked No. 5 in the UFC’s 125-pound division but is coming off a decision loss to Ray Borg in March. Prior to that the 32-year-old BJJ and Judo black belt had scored a unanimous decision over Dustin Ortiz last September. Between March 2014-May 2015 Formiga racked up a trio of wins over Scott Jorgensen, Zach Makovsky and Wilson Reis. But a split decision loss to Henry Cejudo in Nov. 2015 snapped the winning streak. Formiga has finished eight of his 19 career wins via submission.
Sasaki most recently earned “Performance of the Night” for his submission win over Justin Scoggins at UFC Fight Night 111 last month in Singapore. Before that Sasaki had dropped a decision to Wilson Reis in February following a submission win over Willie Gates in May of last year in his flyweight debut. The 27-year-old former Shooto champion is now 3-3 inside the octagon and has finished 11 of his 20 career wins via submission and two by knockout.
