The UFC has officially announced a women’s strawweight fight for UFC 219. Former champion Carla Esparza will take on top prospect Cynthia Calvillo at the event, which takes place Dec. 30 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
Esparza has gone 2-1 since dropping the strawweight title to Joanna Jedrzejczyk in 2015. In her first fight back, she scored a decision victory over Juliana Lima. Then, Esparza lost for the second time in the UFC via split decision against Randa Markos. In her last fight, Esparza defeated Maryna Moroz to improve her professional record to 12-4. After reaching the finals on the 20th season of “The Ultimate Fighter” Esparza defeated Rose Namajunas for the inaugural strawweight title in 2014.
Calvillo joined the UFC earlier this year after building a 3-0 record on the independent circuit. In her promotional debut, she scored a first-round submission over Amanda Cooper. In her last fight, he took home a decision victory over veteran Joanne Calderwood.
This bout will be part of the main card of UFC 219. The event also features the return of former bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz who meets Jimmie Rivera. A main event for the card has not been announced.
