Bellator MMA has announced the next challenge for Emanuel Newton’s light heavyweight title. The champ will take on Joey Beltran in the main event of Bellator 124, which takes place Sept. 12 at the Compuware Arena in Plymouth, Mich.
Newton defeated Atanas Djambazov, Muhammed Lawal and Mikhail Zayats to win the season eight light heavyweight tournament. He then defeated Lawal against for the interim version of the title. This victory finally earned him a rematch with Attila Vegh for the belt, which he won for the light heavyweight belt.
Beltran is an extremely unlikely challenger considering his record of late. He is only 3-7 over his last 10 fights. His most recent victory over former IFL champion Vladimir Matyushenko stopped a three-fight winning streak that includes a loss to Quinton “Rampage” Jackson.
Bellator 124 will be part of the promotion’s 11th season. The season begins on Sept. 5 at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn.
