At Legacy Fighting Alliance’s 6th event of the year superior speed and cardio carried Ray Rodriguez to victory over Rivaldo Junior while Mackenzie Dern kept her pro MMA record perfect with a unanimous decision over Katherine Roy. LFA 6 took place March 10th at the Cowboys Dancehall in San Antonio, TX with the main card broadcast on AXS TV.
Striker defeating grappler was the basic story Ray Rodriguez and Rivaldo Junior in the main event. Junior managed to get Rodriguez down in two rounds and came close to submissions in both rounds but Rodriguez’s superior speed and endurance allowed him to keep scoring with strikes throughout the three-round fight. Rodriguez now holds a record of 12-4 with seven wins in a row, his last loss being a unanimous decision against LFA title contender Steven Peterson back in January 2015. Junior took his third loss in a row to stand 15-7.
Bellator vet Eryk Anders made quick work of Jon Kirk in the co-main event. Almost as soon as the opening bell sounded Anders took Kirk down and took top position where he unloaded a series of clubbing strikes and elbows for the TKO at 1:35. Anders’ record improved to 6-0 with this being his debut for any AXS TV promotion, Kirk’s second loss in a row dropped his record to 19-15.
ADCC Worlds, Nogi Worlds Jiu-Jitsu Championship, and World Cup gold medalist Mackenzie Dern surprised nobody with a strategy of taking down her opponent Katherine Roy, the surprise was Dern out-scored the Golden Gloves champion on the feet. Dern’s standup in round 1 seemed a little wild as she’d drop her hands to close the distance with a powerful overhand right but instead of punishing her for the questionable tactic Roy wisely sidestepped to avoid the follow-up single leg takedown.
The problem with this takedown avoidance strategy for Roy is Dern was able to land her left jab and the occasional kick to rack up the points. Dern did managed to get the fight to the ground in rounds 1 and 2 with her second-round attack resulting in her mounting Roy for several punches before rolling to her back for a triangle choke attempt allowed Roy to end the round safely. Roy deserves credit for surviving Dern’s ground game but her lack of scoring in the standup resulted in the judges declaring the fight for Dern with scores of 30-27, 30-27, 29-28. Dern remains undefeated in MMA at 3-0, the downside being her so far inability to make weight hampers her moving on to the UFC as a strawweight. Katherine Roy emerged with a pro record of 1-1.
