Top 10 welterweights Demian Maia (25-7) and Colby Covington (12-1) are set to clash at UFC Fight Night 119. The bout was announced this week.
UFC Fight Night 119 is scheduled for Oct. 28 from Ginasio do Ibirapuera in Sao Paulo, Brazil. A middleweight matchup between Derek Brunson and Lyoto Machida is expected to headline the card.
Maia is coming off a unanimous decision loss to Tyron Woodley for the welterweight championship at UFC 214 in July. The 39-year-old BJJ world champion had been on a seven-fight winning streak prior to that including a decision win over Jorge Masvidal earlier this year and submission wins over Carlos Condit and Matt Brown in 2016.
Maia, a former middleweight title contender as well, is now 10-3 since dropping down to welterweight in 2012. With 25 wins to his credit, Maia has finished 12 by submission and three by knockout. He is currently ranked No. 3 in the 170-pound division.
Covington is presently riding a four-fight winning streak, most recently winning a unanimous decision over Dong Hyun Kim at UFC Fight Night 111 in June. And in 2016 the former Oregon State NCAA All-American racked up wins over Bryan Barberena, Max Griffin and Jonathan Meunier.
Covington is now 7-1 in his UFC tenure and is ranked No. 8 in the welterweight division. The 29-year-old American Top Team product has finished six of his 12 career wins via submission and one by knockout.
