DEEP 67 – 06/22/2014: Kenji Osawa Retirement Ceremony & Exhibition Match

Kenji Osawa shared his thought with the reporters at the press conference held in Tokyo

Kenji Osawa shared his thought with the reporters at the press conference held in TokyoKenji Osawa's retirement ceremony and exhibition match will be held in DEEP 67.

A 37-year old WEC and DREAM vet made a decision to walk away from the sport after losing to Takafumi Otsuka earlier this month.

At the press conference held in Tokyo last week, Osawa talked about his decision, "Eve in the training, I started to think about the easy way out".

"And also, I wanted to fight in the UFC but about a year go, I realized that is not possible because of my record and age."

Osawa made a pro debut in Shooto back in 2003. In 2006 he fought Akitoshi Hokazono for Shooto 135 lbs world title but lost in decision. However, in the next fight he scored a come from behind TKO win against Takeya Mizugaki.

Osawa himself said that this win over UFC fighter was, "The best fight in my career."

From 2008 to 2009 Osawa fought in WEC, then from 2010, he signed with DREAM, and defeated both Yoshiro Maeda and Otsuka.

In 2012, he defeated Lion Takeshi in VTJ 1st, then beat Seiji Akao to get a DEEP title shot but came up short in his rematch against Otsuka.

So, Osawa never won a title in MMA but certainly left a big impression on many MMA fans around the world.

His retirement exhibition match will be sort of like what we used to see in pro-wrestling.
Osawa is going to face series of top Japanese MMA fighters for about a minute each because "I wanted to take photo with those friends in MMA."

The detail and participants of this exhibition match will be announced in a later date but we can expect to see bunch of today's top UFC fighters as well which should include Mizugaki and Tatsuya "Crusher" Kawajiri.
