Dantas uses range to win decision over Higo in non-title main event at Bellator 177

Bellator bantamweight champion Darrion Caldwell used his reach advantage effectively in his split decision win over Leandro Higo, a three-round non-title fight as Higo missed weight.  Bellator 177 took place April 14th at the Budapest Sports Arena in Budapest, Hungary with one MMA fight webcast at Spike.com, five MMA fights broadcast on Spike TV, and the rest of the card consisting of “dark” kickboxing fights.

For three rounds Eduardo Dantas used his jab and lead leg kicks and controlled the clinch when Higo did close the distance, a strategy that racked up points with the judges.  Former LFA champion Leandro Higo failed to close the distance to inflict any serious damage leading to scorecards of 30-27, 30-27, 29-28.  Dantas now stands 20-4 with four wins in a row with this non-title fight being his fourth win in a row.  Higo fell to 17-3 with his eight-win streak over.

In the co-main event Bellator Season 10 featherweight tournament winner Daniel Weichel survived a bad first round to take a split decision over John Teixeira.  Teixeira knocked Weichel down in the first and swooped in to finish but Weichel survived the position.  In the second round Teixeira slowed while Weichel warmed up with both fighters landing combinations, by the third round Weichel was doing the majority of the scoring with his combinations while Teixeira seemed to be looking for one big fight-ending punch.  With the split decision Weichel improved to 39-9 with four wins in a row, Teixeira dropped to 21-2-2 with his nine-win streak broken.

Bellator return to the States April 21st with Daniel Straus defending the featherweight title against Patricio Freire as the two clash for the unbelievable fourth time.
