Cybrog to defend women’s FW title against Kunitskaya at UFC 222

Cristiane Cyborg

Cris Cyborg makes her second defense of the women’s featherweight title as she takes on Yana Kunitskaya.  UFC 222 takes place March 3rd at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, NV with three prelims webcast at UFC Fight Pass, four broadcast on Fox Sports 1, and the five-fight main card broadcast as a PPV.

Yana Kunitskaya

Cris Cyborg remains one the most successful fighters with a record of 19-1, the downside being she took a “no contest” due to a failed post-fight drug test.  Cyborg entered the UFC the Invicta FC champion and has since gone 4-0 in the Octagon with her TKO of Tonya Evinger earning the vacant women’s featherweight title and a unanimous decision over Holly Holm being her first defense.  10-3 Yana Kunitskaya also holds a “no contest” but for her it was due to a premature referee stoppage in a bout that originally netted Kunitskaya the Invicta FC bantamweight title.  That victory was over Tonya Evinger while her follow-up rematch to Evinger she lost by rear-naked choke in March 2017.  After Evinger moved on to the UFC Kunitskaya won the Invicta bantamweight title with a unanimous decision over Raquel Pa’aluhi last August while this fight marks her Octagon debut.

In the co-main event #2 ranked featherweight Frankie Edgar faces #3 Brian Ortega.  Former lightweight champion Edgar moved down to featherweight in February 2013 and has since gone 7-2 for an overall record of 22-5-1.  Both of Edgar’s losses in this division were to #1 ranked Jose Aldo while his two most recent wins were over #5 Jeremy Stephens and #10 ranked Yair Rodriguez.  Ortega is undefeated at 13-0 but holds one “no contest” due to failing a post-fight drug test.  Since that “NC” Ortega picked up five wins in a row with his latest wins over Renato Moicano and Cub Swanson both earning a “Performance of the Night” bonus.

Mackenzie Dern with submission

Topping the Fox Sports 1 card is former ADCC Worlds champion Mackenzie Dern making her UFC debut against Ashley Yoder.  In MMA Dern is 5-0 with wins in LFC over Kenia Rosas and Montana Stewart, LFA over Katherine Roy and Mandy Polk, and most recent in Invicta FC over Kaline Medeiros.  Yoder enters this bout 5-3 with a win over Amber Brown in Invicta FC but losses in her UFC appearances to Justine Kish and Angela Hill.
