Corey Anderson vs. Gian Villante booked for UFC 181
A light heavyweight match-up between TUF 19 winner Corey Anderson and Gian Villante has been added to UFC 181, scheduled for Dec. 6 in Las Vegas. UFC officials announced the bout on Tuesday.
UFC 181 is headlined with a middleweight title bout with Chris Weidman defending his belt against Vitor Belfort, and a lightweight title fight with Anthony Pettis putting his belt on the line against Gilbert Melendez.
Anderson (3-0) was Coach Frankie Edgar’s first pick on The Ultimate Fighter season 19. He took out Josh Clark and Patrick Walsh via decision in the first two rounds, then scored a 61-second TKO win over Matt Van Buren to win the TUF 19 Finale in July. Former Bellator middleweight champ Ben Askren is the one who convinced Anderson, a former collegiate wrestler, to give MMA a try.
Villante (12-5) is 2-2 inside the Octagon since making his UFC debut last year. Aside from decision losses to Ovince Saint Preux (majority) and Fabio Maldonado (unanimous), the 29-year-old New Yorker has been able to pick up a TKO win over Cody Donovan last November, and most recently, a split decision over Sean O’Connell in June.
With the addition of Anderson vs. Villante, UFC 181 now includes:
- Chris Weidman vs. Vitor Belfort – for middleweight title
- Anthony Pettis vs. Gilbert Melendez – for lightweight title
- Travis Browne vs. Brendan Schaub
- Corey Anderson vs. Gian Villante
