Number five ranked bantamweight Bryan Caraway (21-7) has been forced to withdraw from next week’s UFC Fight Night 103 card due to injury. Caraway was expected to face number six ranked Jimmie Rivera (20-1) on the night’s main card on Fox Sports 1. The promotion is currently in search of a replacement.
UFC Fight Night 103 is headlined with a featherweight matchup between Hall of Famer BJ Penn and number 10 ranked Yair Rodriguez. The event will take place Jan. 15 from Talking Stick Resort Arena in Phoenix, Ariz.
Caraway is currently 6-2 inside the Octagon and is coming off a split decision win over Aljamain Sterling at UFC Fight Night 88 in May. Before that he had won a unanimous decision over Eddie Wineland at UFC on Fox 16 in July 2015. It has been reported that Caraway has been dealing with a shoulder injury and it is unclear when he will be cleared to fight again.
Former flyweight title challenger, John Dodson (18-8), who recently made his return to the bantamweight division, has thrown his name in the hat and said he is willing to step-in against Rivera on short notice. Dodson posted to Twitter on Wednesday:
@jimmierivera135 I hear you need an opponent next week for #UFCPhoenix #LetsDoThis you in? @ufc @danawhite @seanshelby
There’s no word yet from UFC officials if they will accept Dodson’s offer. He’s coming off a split decision loss to John Lineker in October following a 37-second TKO win over Manny Gamburyan in April.
Rivera is riding an incredible 19-fight winning streak, most recently winning a unanimous decision over former title contender Urijah Faber at UFC 203 in September. He also holds UFC wins over Iuri Alcantara, Pedro Munhoz and Marcus Brimage.
