BW title fight off, MW and LW still on at MFC 40

Tom GallicchioOne title fight is off but two belt bouts are still on for MFC 40 with the middleweight and lightweight titles on the line.  MFC 40 takes place May 9th at the Shaw Convention Center in Edmonton, Alberta with a main card broadcast live on AXS TV.

In the main event Tom Gallicchio fights Kurt Southern for the vacant lightweight title.  This is the fight that won the “Punch the Vote” promotion to earn main event status, not surprising considering this is a rematch of their fast-paced bout in January Gallicchio won by rear-naked choke.  After going 1-3 in 2011 Gallicchio took a year-and-a-half off before returning in May of last year to defeat David Johnson before fighting Southern the first time.  13-5 Southern also took a year-and-a-half off from June 2011-Februay 2013 and has since gone 2-2 with an armbar loss to Jonatas Novaes followed by a north-south choke win over Mukai Maromo and TKO win over Novaes again before the first bout with Gallicchio.

Sam AlveyThe co-main event sees Bellator vet Sam Alvey defend the middleweight title for the first time by taking on Wes Swofford.  Interestingly Alvey is also scheduled to fight Gerald Meerschaert at NAFC just three weeks later assuming there is no injury following this fight.  21-5 Alvey lost to Elvis Mutapcic by unanimous decision in his MFC debut but followed up with a TKO of Jay Silva before defeating Jason South by TKO for the belt.  9-4 Swofford also defeated Silva in MFC but his last two fights have been in regional promotions where he lost to Tomasz Drwal by armbar followed by a KO of Tramain Smith last November.

Originally Anthony Birchak was scheduled to fight Kevin Croom for the vacant bantamweight title, with Birchak out due to a back injury Croom now faces Jesse Brock in a “title elimination” fight.  14-4 Croom is coming off a unanimous decision over Bryan Goldsby in TFC, a fight that extended the Bellator vet’s win streak to nine fights in a row.  Fellow Bellator vet Brock takes this fight coming off a loss to the legendary Caol Uno while his last fight in Bellator was a unanimous decision over Adrian Cruz at Bellator 105.
