Ben Askren will defend his ONE welterweight title one more time before retiring from MMA. The promotion announced that he will defend his belt against former lightweight champion Shinya Aoki at ONE Championship: Immortal Pursuit, which takes place Nov. 24 at Singapore Indoor Stadium in Kallang, Singapore.
Over the weekend, Askren made his second successful welterweight title defense with a second-round finish over Zebaztian Kadestam. He originally won the belt in his second fight for ONE when he defeated Nobutatsu Suzuki via first-round knockout. In 2010, Askren defeated Lyman Good for the Bellator welterweight title. He defended the belt four times over Jay Hieron, Douglas Lima, Karl Amoussou and Andrey Koreshkov before leaving the promotion.
Aoki has been out of action since losing the ONE lightweight title against Eduard Folayang last November. The defeated snapped a nine-fight winning streak that dated back to 2012. Since that fight, Aoki returned to ONE for a grappling match and fell via submission against Garry Tonon. Over the course of his career, the former Dream lightweight champion has scored signature victories over the likes of Kazushi Sakuraba, Marcus Aurelio, Tatsuya Kawajiri, Caol Uno, former WEC champion Rob McCullough and former UFC and Bellator champion Eddie Alvarez.
The upcoming ONE Championship event will also feature a strawweight title fight. Champion Angela Lee will defend her title against Mei Yamaguchi. Lee defeated Yamaguchi for the vacant title last year in a back-and-forth five-round decision.
