Bellator remakes Marloes Coenen vs. Julia Budd for inaugural women’s featherweight title
Per a report from MMAFighting, Bellator will once again look to crown their inaugural women’s featherweight champion with a match between Marloes Coenen and Julia Budd. The bout will reportedly headline Bellator 174, which takes place March 3 at the WinStar World Casino and Resort in Thackerville, Okla.
The two were originally slated to face off for the belt at Bellator 155. However, Budd dropped out of the bout at the last minute with an injury. Coenen went on the lose via submission to Alexis Dufresne on the card.
Prior to that defeat, Coenen had won her other two bouts under the Bellator banner against Annalisa Bucci and Arlene Blencowe. The veteran competitor has been fighting professionally since 2000. During her career, she has picked up signature victories over Roxanne Modafferi, Megumi Yabushita and Liz Carmouche. In 2010, Coenen defeated Sarah Kaufman to win the Strikeforce women’s bantamweight title. She defended the belt once before losing it to Miesha Tate the following year.
Budd began her career with a 2-2 record for Strikeforce. In her last fight for the promotion, she fell to Ronda Rousey. Since that defeat, Budd has gone on a seven-fight winning streak. In 2015, she signed with Bellator and has defeated Gabrielle Holloway, Roberta Rovel and Blencowe all via decision.
