A lightweight matchup between former champ Eddie Alvarez (28-5) and Dustin Poirier (21-5) has been added to May’s UFC 211 lineup. Promotion officials announced the bout on Tuesday.
UFC 211 will be held May 13 from American Airlines Center in Dallas. The event is headlined with two championship fights as Stipe Miocic puts his heavyweight belt on the line against Junior Dos Sanots and Joanna Jedrzejczyk defends her strawweight title against Jessica Andrade.
Alvarez lost his lightweight title and had a three-fight winning streak snapped by Conor McGregor at UFC 205 this past November. Prior to that the 33-year-old Philadelphia native had scored decision wins over Gilbert Melendez and Anthony Pettis before stopping Rafael Dos Anjos in July 2016 to claim the 155-pound championship. The Bellator transplant is now 3-2 inside the octagon and holds the No. 3 spot in the rankings.
Poirier is coming off an amazing “Fight of the Night” decision win over Jim Miller at UFC 208 last month. In September of last year Poirier had a four-fight run stopped by Michael Johnson at UFC Fight Night 94. Earlier in 2016, “The Diamond” had won a decision over Joe Duffy and knocked out Bobby Green. Currently ranked No. 10, Poirier has gone 5-1 since making the return to lightweight in April 2015.
