Alistair Overeem-Roy Nelson added to UFC 185
UFC officials have confirmed a heavyweight match for UFC 185. Former Strikeforce, Dream and K-1 champion Alistair Overeem will return to action against former IFL champion Roy Nelson. The event takes place March 14 at the American Airlines Center in Dallas.
Overeem is 2-3 in his last five fights, but he is coming off a win in his last outing. He scored a first-round knockout of Stefan Struve on the main card of UFC on Fox “dos Santos vs. Miocic.” Over the course of his career, he has also defeated Vitor Belfort, Sergei Kharitonov, Mark Hunt, Fabricio Werdum and Brock Lesnar.
In 2007, Overeem defeated Paul Buentello to claim the inaugural Strikeforce heavyweight title. On New Year’s Eve 2010, he needed only 19 seconds to best Todd Duffee and take the inaugural Dream heavyweight belt. Earlier that year, he defeated Tyrone Spong, Gokhan Saki and Peter Aerts to claim the K-1 World Grand Prix 2010.
Nelson went on a three-fight winning streak between 2012-2013 that placed him in the upper level of the heavyweight division. However, since defeating Cheick Kongo at UFC 159, he has gone only 1-3. In his last fight, he fell victim to the knockout power of Hunt in the second round.
“Big Country” won the inaugural IFL heavyweight title with a victory over Antoine Jaoude. He defended the belt twice before the promotion closed up shop. In 2009, Nelson won the 10th season of the UFC’s reality show “The Ultimate Fighter.”
In the main event of UFC 185, UFC lightweight champion Anthony “Showtime” Pettis will defend his title against Rafael dos Anjos.
